Global GEP (High Ability) P1-3 GEP

What is the Gifted Education Program?

The Gifted Education Program is an advanced curriculum available in only a select few top primary schools. It targets intellectually gifted young minds through a series of special screening tests, in which only the top-most percentile of students will be selected to enroll in the this education program. Once selected, you will still be given the option to accept or decline the offer.

Every year, all Primary 3 students who are enrolled in a government school or government-aided school will get the opportunity to take part in two tests to assess their suitability for this program. Students who score well in the screening test in August will be invited to advance to the selection test in October. After that, they may be offered a placement in the program from Primary 4 to 6. This might require transferring schools if this program is not available in the student’s original school.

The GEP is meant to stretch gifted students to their full potential, so you can expect the curriculum to be intensive. Even if your child has been doing well in school thus far, things might not be as smooth-sailing once they begin their GEP journey. Each subject’s syllabus will be packed with more advanced and in-depth content, requiring teachers to ramp up their pace. Your child will also be studying alongside similarly gifted students. It is important to keep in mind that this may be especially taxing on your child once PSLE rolls around, as most of the topics taught in GEP are not examinable in PSLE. As such, GEP students will have to keep up with both the regular syllabus and their advanced syllabus, giving them less time to study for PSLE.

P1-3 GEP Preparation: English, Math, and General Ability

Our courses for Gifted Education Program (GEP) preparation is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the syllabus and question types that are required of them during the first and second rounds of the GEP test, as well as skills and knowledge comparable to those taught in higher levels of the primary school syllabus.

The GEP screening occurs every year, where Primary Three students take a series of tests to gauge their ability and stream them into the Gifted Education Program – touted by some as every parent’s goal. At nine years of age, most students may be acutely unprepared for the demanding tests, which can be very mentally strenuous. Furthermore, these two tests can determine where students will spend their upper primary years and possibly which secondary school they will go to. We believe that no child should be short-changed on what can be a potentially life-changing verdict, especially at so early on in their lives.

As such, we do not require any placement tests for students to enroll in our GEP tuition classes. Each student will be coached and guided to prepare them for both rounds of the GEP tests. Our GEP preparation program includes GEP English, comprising reading comprehension, pattern recognition and vocabulary, and GEP Maths, covering symbolic representation, linguistic variants, problem-solving skills, mental sums, and more. Additionally, in line with our GEP preparation, students will be familiarized with the GEP English and GEP Maths examination format, making the actual screening tests a breeze for them. The enrichment does not just stop at the GEP tests – our classes will also equip students with the skills and knowledge required for higher-level upper primary syllabus, giving them a competitive edge over their peers.

Gain a head start and be ahead of the times by enrolling in our Gifted Education Program classes as early as Primary One, where we can better pave the way for our students to prepare them for the “big year”. After the GEP tests, regardless of whether students choose to remain in the mainstream or go for the GEP curriculum, they will definitely see their newfound English, Maths and General Ability skills put to good use.
