H1 General Paper

“You don’t write because you want to say something, you write because you have something to say.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald

Our JC General Paper Tuition prepares JC 1/2 students for the GCE A’ Level H1 General Paper Examinations. Every week, tutors will present students with a topic or a set of similar topics which they will analyse, discuss, and craft a suitable response for each question. Our JC General Paper Tuition Tutors will train on their writing skills, such that they are able to express their opinions articulately and offer a balanced perspective. Students will be taught to respond in different point of views, the ways to improve their sentence structures, and to avoid ‘slippery slopes’, all through our topic discussion and writing drills. At the end of the day, our students will be able to produce arguments which are fluent, sharp and logical.

Our K2 Math and General Ability curriculum prepares students with skills of understanding and solving intriguing questions.

Our teachers strive to engage children in the world of numbers through strengthening their foundation at the start, and then gradually building up the momentum to expose them to mind-stretching problems and develop their critical thinking skills. The mental addition and subtraction ‘more than’, ‘less than’ concept and the major topics of P1 will be covered.

The K2 Maths coursework will be covering challenging mathematical concepts:

  • Symbolic representation
  • Linguistic variations
  • Mental Sums and Number Bonds/Patterns
  • Tips, tricks and short cut for non-routine problem sums
  • General Ability questions

English

alphabet close up communication 278887 e1525064640485

Our K2 English course aims in preparing our preparatory students to the Primary 1 syllabus gradually and all areas of language. In general, schools expect children to enter Primary One with the following proficiency:

  • Read (with articulatory and auditory phonetics) and write all 26 alphabets in the capital and small letters.
  • Know how to read and spell simple words (vocabulary).
  • Know how to construct simple English sentences (grammar).

Some students may not be as proficient as their peers when entering Primary One – which is completely normal, as children usually develop at different paces. However, they may miss out on early phases in the classroom, where they are often brought out of class for separate English lessons. As such, it is definitely beneficial for K2 students to brush up on their English proficiency before they move on to Primary School. Our K2 English course aims to do that and more. Apart from going back to the basics of grammar and vocabulary, our students are taught to be smart readers and draw their own inferences from clues given in simple texts. They are also introduced to how context can change the meaning of different statements. At the end of the course, our K2 English students will be well equipped to venture into Primary One. Furthermore, they will hopefully also realise that reading, writing, and expressing themselves can be an enjoyable process. All in all, we ensure that our students will be at the top of their class when it comes to their English skills, boosting their performance and confidence when they begin the next phase of their education.

Our K2 English and General Ability Course aim to instill a love for reading, writing and expressing oneself in English, and covers:

  • Grammar rules: starts from the basics, with gradual exposure to different word classes, tenses, and expressions
  • Vocabulary word bank: introduces basic words and phrases used for describing people, places, and emotions
  • Cloze Passage: focuses on helping students look for textual clues and make simple inferences
  • Comprehension skills: help young readers to understand context and meaning in different text types

Global GEP (High Ability) P1-3 GEP

GE 27

What is the Gifted Education Program?

The Gifted Education Program is an advanced curriculum available in only a select few top primary schools. It targets intellectually gifted young minds through a series of special screening tests, in which only the top-most percentile of students will be selected to enroll in the this education program. Once selected, you will still be given the option to accept or decline the offer.

Every year, all Primary 3 students who are enrolled in a government school or government-aided school will get the opportunity to take part in two tests to assess their suitability for this program. Students who score well in the screening test in August will be invited to advance to the selection test in October. After that, they may be offered a placement in the program from Primary 4 to 6. This might require transferring schools if this program is not available in the student’s original school.

The GEP is meant to stretch gifted students to their full potential, so you can expect the curriculum to be intensive. Even if your child has been doing well in school thus far, things might not be as smooth-sailing once they begin their GEP journey. Each subject’s syllabus will be packed with more advanced and in-depth content, requiring teachers to ramp up their pace. Your child will also be studying alongside similarly gifted students. It is important to keep in mind that this may be especially taxing on your child once PSLE rolls around, as most of the topics taught in GEP are not examinable in PSLE. As such, GEP students will have to keep up with both the regular syllabus and their advanced syllabus, giving them less time to study for PSLE.

P1-3 GEP Preparation: English, Math, and General Ability

employee wellness program managing employee health

Our courses for Gifted Education Program (GEP) preparation is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the syllabus and question types that are required of them during the first and second rounds of the GEP test, as well as skills and knowledge comparable to those taught in higher levels of the primary school syllabus.

The GEP screening occurs every year, where Primary Three students take a series of tests to gauge their ability and stream them into the Gifted Education Program – touted by some as every parent’s goal. At nine years of age, most students may be acutely unprepared for the demanding tests, which can be very mentally strenuous. Furthermore, these two tests can determine where students will spend their upper primary years and possibly which secondary school they will go to. We believe that no child should be short-changed on what can be a potentially life-changing verdict, especially at so early on in their lives.

As such, we do not require any placement tests for students to enroll in our GEP tuition classes. Each student will be coached and guided to prepare them for both rounds of the GEP tests. Our GEP preparation program includes GEP English, comprising reading comprehension, pattern recognition and vocabulary, and GEP Maths, covering symbolic representation, linguistic variants, problem-solving skills, mental sums, and more. Additionally, in line with our GEP preparation, students will be familiarized with the GEP English and GEP Maths examination format, making the actual screening tests a breeze for them. The enrichment does not just stop at the GEP tests – our classes will also equip students with the skills and knowledge required for higher-level upper primary syllabus, giving them a competitive edge over their peers.

Gain a head start and be ahead of the times by enrolling in our Gifted Education Program classes as early as Primary One, where we can better pave the way for our students to prepare them for the “big year”. After the GEP tests, regardless of whether students choose to remain in the mainstream or go for the GEP curriculum, they will definitely see their newfound English, Maths and General Ability skills put to good use.

Prepares students for …

Round 2 – Selection Test in October

Do note that there is no placement test required prior to enrolment for GEP classes.

GEP Tuition for Primary 1 to Primary 3

Our GEP tuition prepares children for the screening and selection exercises with material pitched at gifted level rather than enrichment level. Lessons cover English, Maths and General Ability, using topical notes and practice questions built around what the assessment actually asks. Parents often tell us the English is pitched closer to secondary school standard, which is exactly why general tuition rarely prepares a child for it.
