A1 Good morning, Mrs. Huang. I know your son has been very helpful in interpreting when we needed to talk to you, but today I’ve asked an interpreter to come in. This is because that I want to be absolutely sure you fully understand what’s wrong with you.
A2 Since we did our last scan last month ago, the tumour pressing on your kidney has grown from a size of a marble to the size of … eh … Let’s say a large walnut. If it keeps growing at that rate, there is a risk of kidney damage.
Z2 We have a choice. We can operate, which is somewhat risky, or we can try more chemotherapy. The last time you had a chemotherapy that didn’t work but it could work if we can give you another course.
Z3 That was the impression I had that your son was not telling everything. He seemed to think that you should be spared the hard facts, but I’m obliged to give you all the information so you can make your decision regarding the operation.
Z4 It is a serious operation, mainly because we can’t be certain that we’ll be able to remove all of the tumour. We really won’t know until we open you up. If we do remove all of it, your chances are good as long as you keep having regular check-ups.

I think it is unnecessary to ask an interpreter to come in. My son is a general practitioner in our home country. He is studying English in this country in order to practice in Australia. I think he has explained everything you and other doctors said to me. However, if the interpreter has been here, let him do the interpreting.
